Census Outreach

DESCRIPTION

Chinatown Youth Initiatives has been partnering with other organizations such as Asian Americans for Equality (AAFE), the Asian American Legal Defense and Education Fund (AALDEF), the Youth Census Advocacy Project through APIAVote, and the Committee Against Anti-Asian Violence (CAAAV) in order to learn about and promote participation in undercounted Asian communities in the 2010 Census. The Census Outreach Team’s twofold goals are to educate other young people about the importance of an accurate count in the 2010 Census, as well as to mobilize youth to engage in ongoing community outreach efforts for important community causes.

VALUES

Chinatown Youth Initiatives seeks to promote community engagement, while simultaneously building the outreach and advocacy skills of New York City youth who are involved in and served by CYI programming. AALDEF hosted an educational workshop for CYI youth to enhance our understandings of how the census works, why filling out our census information is important, and what impact our participation in census outreach efforts can have for Asian and Asian American communities in the city. Our census outreach efforts have consisted of door-to-door canvassing in Chinatown, Flushing, and Sunset Park, as well as phone-banking with our partner organizations. These outreach efforts have provided CYI youth with opportunities to meet and work with other young people engaged in similar efforts. Participating in door-to-door and park outreach have also provided important opportunities for building coalitions and relationships with an array of other New York City residents and organizations from various neighborhoods who are doing all sorts of other interesting kinds of work.
