CYI is hiring a new advisor for Chinatown Beautification Day 2013!

For more information, please check out our flyer.

About the advisor position:
The program advisor serves to provide mentorship and support to CBD coordinators, in order to promote their efficacy and empowerment throughout the planning year. The advisor provides flexible and adaptive leadership to the coordinators, depending on their needs and articulated goals each year.

About CYI and CBD:
The mission of Chinatown Youth Initiatives (CYI) is to empower New York City youth with the knowledge and skills necessary to address the needs of Chinatowns, Asian Americans, and other underrepresented communities. By providing a safe and supportive environment, CYI works to build a legacy of young leaders by strengthening awareness of community issues through project initiatives.

The 11th Annual Chinatown Beautification Day (CBD) and our youth conference is a weekend for high school students to explore leadership and community. Through a full day of workshops around leadership, community involvement, environmental awareness and more, high school students are encouraged to get involved with their own communities and given the tools necessary to create change. The conference is followed by a clean-up of Chinatown, where over 200 volunteers come out to physically clean up the streets as well as show the community how much they care.

To apply, send us your resume and cover letter to apply@cyinyc.org.

If you have any questions or concerns, send them to Jenny Li at jenny.li@cyinyc.org.

Apply to Chinatown Literacy Project 2012-2013!

Chinatown Literacy Project (CLP) is a student-led program established to address the problem of illiteracy by providing free ESL classes to adult language learners.

We depend on several important groups of volunteers in our community: high school students to work in small groups with the ESL students, adult teachers to plan and teach the ESL classes and teacher assistants to offer support and attention in the classroom environment. CLP will be from 9 AM to 1 PM every Sunday at Lower East Side Preperatory School, excluding weekends or major holidays.

In addition, high school volunteers participate in weekly discussion-based workshops. In the past, topics have included leadership, immigration, privilege and gentrification.

At the current time, we are recruiting volunteers for our program, which is scheduled to begin mid-October and end in late-April. Interested high school students should fill out our online application. The application is due Friday September 21th at 11:59 PM.

This is a wonderful opportunity to gain teaching experience, to learn from other high school students in New York City, to gain valuable perspective on various social issues, and to aid language-disadvantaged immigrants. High school students will also receive service credit for participating in this program.
